To be honest with you the best way to learn how to build, fix or anything else to do with php is forget the book. Buy a script and play with it. back up your files and test thing and try to build mods for it you will start learning how php and data bases work from there try to build a simple signup or a touch like that. it takes time i self tought my self everything i know about coding and i dont reflect i would be this far if i would have used a book.
Google is my favorite resource for any language, but
Apress has a pertty excellent book called PHP and MySQL, by a guy named Gilmore. It’s just the facts, with some decent backgrouund, and no filler just to make it to the 1,000 page mark.
